Higher education in Malaysia

The Ministry of Education monitors higher education in Malaysia. In most private institutions, English is the medium of instruction for almost all courses, while in public universities, the medium is Malay.

For Certificate and Diploma levels, the age of entry for students is 17 with SPM or GCSE 'O' level, while the Bachelor's degree level can be taken up at the age of 19 or 20 onwards with the STPM or GCE 'A' level or Foundation qualifications.

An undergraduate degree in the relevant field is a prerequisite for taking up postgraduate studies, although requirements may vary between universities and across the fields of study. Postgraduate studies comprise of Masters degrees and Doctoral studies that involve intensive coursework, dissertation or thesis or research work.

While Masters programs take 1 to 5 years for completion for full time students, it takes four years to obtain a Ph.D. Almost all postgraduate courses are taught in English in all institutes that offer them.

Private institutions and foreign branch campuses offer higher education courses including diplomas, certificates, graduation degrees, and post-graduation courses.
